Types of Rot

There are two primary types of wood rot, dry rot and wet rot. Some boards will become dry rotted due to expose to the sun and other forms of weather. Others will rot because water is making its way into the wood in some way. Both problems can be fixed by replacing the board and getting a good coat of primer and paint on it.

Replace vs Patch

Depending on your circumstances, some areas can be patched but some would absolutely require replacement. The right way to do it is almost always to replace and repaint. On the other hand, someone looking to sell may not want to go through the expense and opt for cosmetically patching certain areas.

Replacement Materials

Wherever feasible, we will replace rotted materials with rot resistant materials of (vinyl (PVC) or James Hardie Siding). Many different moldings now come in vinyl that will not rot and can be painted to match existing woodwork. James Harding siding also comes in many of the same profiles of wood or Masonite siding. It is a concrete based siding product that will not rot or warp. This eliminates the possibility of having to replace any of these areas again in the future. It is a little more costly in the beginning, but most people generally agree it is worth it. However, there are some circumstances where we will not be able to use rot resistant materials because they are not available to match your particular moldings or siding.
